After Driver Improvement for Virginia ISAP: What Happens Next?
Completing the 8-Hour Virginia Driver Improvement Clinic is an important step, but it does not automatically end Virginia ISAP. Your remaining obligations depend on the ISAP pathway that applies to you and whether every DMV, court and VASAP requirement has been satisfied.
Driver Improvement Completion Is Not the Same as ISAP Completion
Driver Improvement is the educational component. ISAP is the separate program involving VASAP enrollment, Intelligent Speed Assistance equipment and continuing compliance. Completing the course satisfies the Driver Improvement requirement, but your ISAP obligations continue until the program requirements for your specific case have been completed.
What Driver Improvement Completion Means
You have completed the required Virginia traffic-safety educational component when the clinic requirement applies to your case.
- Eight-hour clinic satisfactorily completed
- Clinic completion is part of your DMV record/reporting process
- The educational requirement has been addressed
- This does not itself authorize ISA device removal
What May Still Be Required
You may still need to remain enrolled, keep the ISA device installed, attend required service appointments and comply with VASAP until your full program term has ended.
- Continuous ISAP enrollment
- Required ISA inspections/service
- Compliance with device and program rules
- Completion of any outstanding court or DMV conditions
If You Chose ISAP Instead of the 90-Day Suspension
Virginia Code § 46.2-506 requires a qualifying driver who elects ISAP through the excessive-demerit-point pathway to enroll in ISAP for nine months and satisfactorily complete a Driver Improvement Clinic.
You elected the ISAP option in response to the DMV excessive-point notice.
You enrolled through VASAP and obtained the required ISA equipment and restricted-license status.
You satisfactorily complete the required Virginia Driver Improvement Clinic.
You remain continuously enrolled and compliant for the statutory nine-month period.
VASAP confirms that all applicable requirements have been successfully completed.
If Your ISAP Requirement Came From a Virginia Court
Court-ordered ISAP is not automatically identical to the DMV excessive-point pathway. Virginia law provides that the ISAP enrollment period can be based on the duration ordered by the court. Your court order, DMV record and VASAP instructions control your individual requirement.
Follow the Court-Ordered Term
Do not assume the nine-month DMV administrative term applies to every court-ordered participant.
Complete All Required Conditions
Driver Improvement, education, fees, service requirements or other conditions may vary by case.
Wait for Official Completion
Continue compliance until VASAP confirms that the applicable court and DMV requirements have been satisfied.
VASAP Confirms Successful ISAP Completion
VASAP currently states that the Commission on VASAP will notify you when you have successfully completed all applicable court and/or Virginia DMV requirements. If you are uncertain about your status, contact VASAP rather than assuming that a course certificate or the passage of time automatically closes your case.
All Requirements Complete
The required enrollment period, Driver Improvement requirement and other applicable conditions must be satisfied.
VASAP Notification
VASAP provides the participant with confirmation of successful program completion.
Authorized Removal
The authorized ISA service provider removes the device after successful completion is confirmed.
Who Removes the ISA Device?
VASAP states that the authorized ISA service provider removes the device when the participant has successfully completed the program. VASAP currently states there is no charge for authorized device removal.
Do Not Remove It Yourself
Removing, bypassing or tampering with the ISA device yourself can create a compliance violation and may carry legal consequences.
Use the Authorized Service Provider
Once successful completion is confirmed, schedule removal through the approved service provider servicing your ISA equipment.
Keep Following ISAP Rules Until You Are Officially Released
Keep Required Inspections
Continue attending required ISA service and inspection appointments until the program is officially complete.
Keep the Device Installed
Do not disconnect, bypass or remove the ISA device before authorization.
Keep Following License Restrictions
Continue complying with the restricted-license and program conditions that remain in effect in your case.
What to Check Before Assuming There Is a Problem
Driver Improvement Reporting
Confirm that your clinic completion was successfully reported and that the identifying information used by the clinic matched your DMV record.
Enrollment Period
Confirm that the required ISAP enrollment period has actually ended. Completing the course early does not shorten the required ISAP term.
Outstanding VASAP Requirements
Confirm that there are no unresolved device, service, compliance, education or administrative requirements.
Court or DMV Conditions
Review the original court order or DMV notice to make sure every separate condition has been satisfied.
